Villagers of different trades in front of their village

Your first day

From bare hands to a safe night

In survival you start with nothing. Before the sun goes down:

  1. Gather wood

Hold on a tree to break its logs. Logs make planks, and planks make sticks.

  2. Make a workbench

Four planks make a workbench. Its grid of nine makes tools, chests and doors, and the recipe book lays out what you can make.

  3. Make tools

A wooden pickaxe digs stone. Cobblestone makes stone tools and a furnace.

  4. Light the dark

Coal and a stick make torches. Monsters appear only in the dark, so light keeps them away.

  5. Eat and sleep

Eat to stay full and heal. Three wool and three planks make a bed: sleep through the night and wake there.

Staying alive

Health, hunger and armour

Keep an eye on the bars over your hotbar.

  • Health

Ten hearts. They come back on their own while you are well fed.

  • Hunger

Sprinting, swimming, jumping and fighting make you hungry. When the bar is empty you starve.

  • Air

Ten bubbles under water, then you start to drown.

  • Armour

Leather, gold, iron, diamond and ruby. It takes a share of every blow and wears with use.

  • Passing out

You wake at your bed. Your things stay where you fell, unless the world keeps them.

  • Experience

Ores, smelting, creatures and fishing give experience. Spend its levels at the altar and the anvil.

Difficulty

Four ways to play

Choose when you make a world and change it at any time in its settings.

  • Peaceful

No monsters. Health and food come back by themselves.

  • Easy

Monsters hit softly and wear no armour. Hunger never takes you below half health.

  • Normal

The game as it is meant to be played. Hunger can leave you on half a heart.

  • Hard

Monsters hit harder and come better armed, zombies break down wooden doors, and hunger can kill.

Tools

From wood to ruby

Better tools dig faster, last longer and break harder ores. Ruby gear is made at the workbench from diamond gear, four diamonds and four rubies: the best there is. The diamond piece goes in the middle, the diamonds beside it and the rubies in the corners. It keeps its wear and spells.

Workstations

Craft, cook and build

Hundreds of recipes, and a station for every kind of work.

  • Workbench

The grid of nine for tools, armour, furniture and machines.

  • Furnace

Smelts ores and sand and cooks food over any fuel.

  • Smoker and blast furnace

Cook food or smelt ores twice as fast.

  • Stonecutter

Cuts stone into stairs, slabs and walls, one block at a time.

  • Loom

    Weaves patterns into banners.

  • Anvil

Mends and combines gear, adds spell books and names things.

  • Map table

Copies, zooms out and locks maps.

The enchanting altar's three offers on a phone

Enchanting and alchemy

Spells and potions

Ring the enchanting altar with up to fifteen bookshelves for stronger spells: each offer costs levels and lapis lazuli. The anvil puts spell books on gear and the grindstone takes spells off again. At the alchemy stand, fourteen kinds of potion brew from a mushroom brew, and gunpowder makes them for throwing.

  • Thirty enchantments, curses among them
  • Speed, Healing, Night Vision, Gills and more
  • Throwing potions
  • Spell books from villagers and chests

Farming and food

Grow your food

Till the ground with a hoe near water and plant in the light. Bone meal speeds it all up, and animals breed with their own food.

  • Crops

Wheat, carrots, potatoes and beetroots in watered fields.

  • Pumpkins and melons

Their stems grow the fruit on the ground beside them.

  • Cane and bamboo

Sugar cane by the water, bamboo on sand, dirt and grass.

  • Cocoa and berries

Cocoa pods on jungle logs, wild berries in the taiga.

  • Cooking

Cook meat and fish in a furnace, smoker or campfire; make bread, stews, pies and cookies.

  • Herds

Feed two animals their food and a young one is born.

Amber power

Machines of amber

Amber dust carries power. Levers, buttons, plates and tripwires give it; amber torches, repeaters and comparators shape it; pistons, doors, lamps, droppers, dispensers and rails take it.

  • Amber dust

Lay it in lines; power fades a step with every block.

  • Repeaters and comparators

Delay, renew and compare signals, and read how full a chest is.

  • Observers

Send a pulse when the block in front of them changes.

  • Pistons

Push up to twelve blocks; a gripping piston pulls one back.

  • Hoppers and dispensers

Move items between chests and furnaces, or shoot and pour them out.

  • Rails

Booster, sensor and trigger rails for carts with chests, hoppers and furnaces.

Taming and riding

Friends to ride

Tame horses, donkeys, dogs and cats; lead animals on a rope, name them with a name tag and travel by boat and rail cart.

  • Horses

Ride one until it trusts you, then saddle it. Hold jump to leap.

  • Donkeys

Strap a chest on a tamed donkey to carry fifteen more stacks.

  • Dogs

A bone tames one; it sits when you tell it and fights by your side.

  • Cats

Raw fish wins a stray over; it brings you gifts.

  • Pigs

Saddle one and steer it with a carrot rod.

  • Boats and carts

Boats of six woods, and rail carts that creatures can ride too.

Adventure gear

Take to the air, take it all with you

Gear of OreFolk's own for the long road.

  • Wind cloak

Worn in the chest slot. Jump in the air to open it and glide where you look; you land unhurt. Found in castle vaults and the Black Keep's hoard.

  • Firework rockets

Launch one while gliding to shoot ahead and climb, or from the ground to take off.

  • Expedition chest

Four gold ingots and four leather round a chest. Break it and it keeps its load, a whole chest's worth in one slot.

  • Sixteen colours

A dye and an expedition chest make one of that colour, its load and its brass kept.

Trading with a villager on a phone

Trading and raids

Trade, and defend the village

Villagers trade by their work: farmers, librarians, smiths, fishers and many more. Every trade raises their level, from Newcomer to Grandmaster, and opens new offers. Strike down a bandit captain and his gang swears revenge: carry it into a village and a raid begins. Hold the village through every wave and you become its hero.

  • Nineteen trades with five levels each
  • Emeralds as the villages' money
  • Raids of three to eight waves
  • Heroes trade cheaper and get gifts

On your phone

Touch controls

Built for touch from the first day. When you point at something you can use, a key over the hotbar says what a tap will do: Trade, Ride, Feed, Shear, Milk and more.

The game's touch controls on an iPhone
  1. Walk. Push past the ring to sprint.

  2. Drag to look round. Tap to place or use, hold to break, tap a creature to strike it.

  3. Jump. In creative, double tap to fly.

  4. Sneak, and dive in water.

  5. Choose what you hold. Hold a slot to throw its stack.

  6. Your inventory, crafting grid and recipe book.

  7. Health, hunger and experience.

  8. Chat and commands, then the pause menu.

In the inventory

  • Tap a stack to pick it up and tap a slot to put it down.
  • Hold a stack: a bar fills and splits it, from one item to the whole stack.
  • Slide over slots to spread what you hold evenly.
  • Double tap to gather a kind into one stack, or move it across.
