The world
A world that grows from a seed
No two worlds are alike. Each grows from its seed into mountains and plains, forests and deserts, seas and rivers, 192 blocks from the bedrock to the sky, with villages wherever the land suits them.
Forty-six lands
From ice peaks to bamboo thickets
Heat, rain and the distance from the sea shape the land. Each kind of land has its own trees, plants and creatures, and grass, leaves and water take its colours.
-

Plains and meadows
Rolling grass with clumps of flowers and the odd oak. Most villages stand here, among sunflower fields and flower meadows.
-

Forests
Oak and birch woods, flower forests in bands of colour, and dark forests under wide crowns and huge mushrooms.
-

Taigas
Spruces and pines on a floor of needles, mossy boulders and wild berry bushes. Foxes and dog packs live here.
-

Snowfields and Ice Spires
Snow on every top, iced rivers and spires of packed ice rising from the plain. White rabbits and polar bears live here.
-

Mountains and peaks
Bare stone, snow ridges and crags high above the valleys. Emeralds hide in the rock of the mountains.
-

Desert
Dunes of sand over sandstone, cacti and dead bushes, and villages of domed houses round a well.
-

Canyons
Bands of coloured clay, hoodoo spires and scrub on the mesas. Their rock is rich in gold.
-

Savanna
Flat-topped acacias and tall grass where horses and donkeys roam, and villages of round huts.
-

Jungle
Giant trees hung with vines and cocoa pods, bamboo thickets, melons and villages on stilts.
-

Swamp
Swamp oaks standing in dark water among lily pads, and houses on piles joined by boardwalks.
-

Oceans
Warm, mild, cold and frozen seas. Icebergs rise from the coldest, and kelp forests grow in the mild and cold ones.
-

Beaches and rivers
Sandy beaches and rocky coasts, rivers that wind through every land and ice over in the cold.

Underground
Caves all the way down
Under the land lie great caverns held up by stone pillars, winding tunnels, ravines and flooded caves, waterfalls and springs, and lava lakes deep below. Abandoned mines run deep under the land and dungeons hide their monster cages.

Ores and gems
Where the ores lie
Every ore keeps to its own depths. The bands below were measured in the game's own worlds: the brighter the band, the more of that ore lies there.

- Coal and iron also lie high in the mountains, and emeralds only there.
- Canyons hold far more gold than other lands.
- Ruby is the rarest of all: a few blocks near the bedrock, never beside open air. It makes the best gear in the game.

The seas
Seas full of life
Kelp forests sway on the sea floor and seagrass covers the shallows. Cod, salmon, pufferfish and tropical fish swim in schools, and squids jet through the open water.

Sky and weather
A day of twenty minutes
The sun rises and sets in a warm glow, and clouds drift with their shadows moving over the land. At night the stars turn and the moon goes through its eight phases. Rain falls where the land is wet, snow where it is cold.
-

Sunrise and sunset
The sky glows round a low sun, and far land fades into the glow.
-

Stars and moon
Hundreds of stars, a few warmer or bluer, and a moon that waxes and wanes.
-

Thunderstorms
Lightning strikes in a storm and can set what it hits alight.
-

Snow
Snow settles on open ground, and still water freezes from its edges.
